51 votes for the Senate, banged in by Trump
Ok, let me say this: Overall Trump is a disaster. He has irked our foreign allies and about 50% of the population still disagrees with him. What's ironic is that protecting a blonde haired white President is more difficult than protecting a black one? The Secret Service must be having fits trying to stop all the threats that are underway to get this guy!
Trump though is now telling the senate to go nuclear!! I'm all for it! From 1789 to about the mid-1990's the way to pass a bill in the Senate was 51 votes. That procedure is codified clearly in the U.S. Constitution. But somehow things got astray and we ended up with 60 votes to pass a bill in the Senate. Did someone ask me or America if they could bypass our Constitution and do whatever they want? The 60 vote cloture rule to break a filibuster, was a feature of debate that was incorporated somehow to the Senate rules, as the pro forma way of passing a bill.
That tipped the balance of power to whichever party had the supermajority in Congress. Now the Democrats are screaming in pain that this rule is being violated by Trump! But in reality, 51 votes are all that was needed by the Constitution. Trump is putting us back to where the framers of the Constitution wanted our system to go. Should we actually complain about that situation ? I'm starting to get fed up by Nancy Pelosi and the gang in Congress. They have an outdated agenda of social welfare that is proving very unpopular in the country. It might be time for a change.
